Indicator overview

Methodology
Read methodology

UN DESA World Population Prospects 2024 medium-variant estimate, shown as births per woman. Projections are not used.

Limitations
Fertility rates from other sources such as the World Bank use different inputs and estimation and can differ slightly; they are not mixed with this series. OrbisLens currently shows the 2023 estimate only.

How to read this indicator

Total fertility rate is not the year's number of births or the completed family size of women who have finished childbearing. It summarizes age-specific fertility in a period.

Low fertility does not necessarily mean population falls in the same year. Population composition, deaths and migration also matter; the rate alone cannot explain the causes.
