Indicator overview

Methodology
Read methodology

UN DESA World Population Prospects 2024 medium-variant estimate of population change from births, deaths and international migration. Projections are not used.

Limitations
It differs from World Bank population growth, which uses midyear populations and other inputs, so the two are not combined. OrbisLens currently shows the 2023 estimate only.

How to read this indicator

Positive values indicate growth and negative values decline. This is not a fertility rate; population change reflects births, deaths and international migration.

The same rate can describe different numbers of people in different-sized populations. Do not multiply a WDI total by a WPP rate and present it as an official count when sources or periods differ.
