Indicator overview

Methodology
Read methodology

Published in World Bank WDI and derived from a period life table based on that year's sex- and age-specific death rates.

Limitations
Values based on UN Population Division data may be interpolated from five-year periods and can differ from observed events or national official life tables.

How to read this indicator

Life expectancy at birth is neither the average age of living residents nor an individual's remaining lifespan. It summarizes mortality conditions; median age describes population composition.

A small country difference does not establish the effect of a healthcare system or a lifestyle. Check age- and sex-specific evidence and consistency across periods before drawing such conclusions.
